Sankofa January 3rd-16th, 2007 Itinerary

Our Sankofa Journey will begin as soon as we land in Accra, the capitol of Ghana.  We will check into our hotel, rest, exchange money and have our welcoming ceremony.

Each day we will learn Twi, the main language of Ghana and learn about the journey we will experience for the day.  Each evening we will have an opportunity to debrief and share our experiences.

We will tour important sites that express the deep cultural and liberation history of Ghana.  This includes “The Black Star Square” the symbol of Ghana’s independence from European rule.

The person most responsible for the independence of Ghana is Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana.  We will pay tribute to him at the mausoleum constructed for him in central Accra.

This scene is not for the light-hearted.  This view of the marketplace is an experience for those willing to venture and find their own fabrics and articles and gifts.

We will have seamstresses and merchants come to visit at the hotel for those who may not choose this experience.

W.E.B. Dubois finally settled in Ghana after learning to appreciate his true heritage as an African.  Today the Dubois Center is a major hub of cultural events and political debates.

Edena (or Elmina) is one of the main dungeons that housed our ancestors on their way to the Americas.  We must never forget.

The Cape Coast dungeon just miles upshore from Elmina will host our first major Sankofa ritual.  We will re-enter the door of return once called the door of no return.  The Europeans never imagined that we would return.  We are coming back to reclaim our heritage and to pay homage to our ancestors.  Here we will experience the true meaning of Sankofa.

While in the Cape Coast-Elmina area we will rest at the Coconut Grove a usual haven for those experiencing the Sankofa Journey.  We will rest, meditate and sleep to the soothing sounds of the ocean.

While in this region we will visit repatriates who have made Ghana home and learn of their experiences and why they made the choice to move here.

At Larteh, Ghana the Asuo Gyebi festival will be occurring.  Nana Efia Nsia is an Asuo Gyebi Okomfo.  You will be welcomed at Larteh and witness the power of divine energies here to serve us.

The majesty of Wli Waterfalls is something to behold in the Volta region of Ghana.  Water is pure and water has no enemies.  Cast your hopes into the water of Wli and let those aspirations traverse throughout the world.

No journey to Ghana is complete without a visit to Kumase the cultural capitol of Ghana and the home of the Asante, the largest group of peoples in Ghana.  In our classes you will learn about the rich history of the Asante.  When we arrive here you will already feel at home.

We will watch the wood carvers at Ahwiaa and see how the adinkra cloth and kente cloth is made.  You will be able to purchase authentic, original pieces of work and try out your bargaining skills.

We return to Accra to plan our return back to the US.  Although you may be weary from the traveling, you will be rejuvenated by the experience of Sankofa.

Say “Yebehyia bio”.  Yes because you will return again to our motherland.
